Art & Design

What is art?

Art is the study of artists, techniques and creative expression.

Why do we learn about art?

Learning art allows us to create our own works of art, craft and design. It helps us to think critically and develop an understanding of how art has influenced our history, culture and enriched our lives.

Art and design is highly valued at Park Hill Primary School and we are committed to providing the children with high quality teaching and learning opportunities to engage them in every aspect of art and design: drawing, painting, sculpture, collage, textiles and printing. The purpose of Art and Design education is to give pupils the skills, concepts and knowledge necessary for them to express their responses to ideas and experiences in a visual or tactile form. It fires their imagination and is a fundamental means of personal expression. While it is essentially a practical subject, art should provide opportunities for reflection and, with increasing sensitivity, pupils should acquire the ability to make informed, critical responses to their own work and that of others.

The school’s policy for Art and Design is led by the National Curriculum guidelines for Key Stages 1 and 2 and The Statutory Framework for the Early Years Foundation Stage. The implementation of the policy is monitored by the Art and Design leader. Curriculum Definition “Art, craft and design embody some of the highest forms of human creativity. A high-quality art and design education should engage, inspire and challenge pupils, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design. As pupils progress, they should be able to think critically and develop a more rigorous understanding of art and design. They should also know how art and design both reflect and shape our history, and contribute to the culture, creativity and wealth of our nation.” National Curriculum, 2014.
